Legislative Update

Monday, May 20, 2019

Neighbors,

Last night, the Governor and leaders from the House and Senate announced a budget that preserves health care funding for over 1 million Minnesotans and makes historic investments in education.

We demonstrated that, as one of the country's two split state governments, we can build bipartisan compromise and common ground to build a state that works better for all Minnesotans.

Here are some details:

  • We increase investments in each student's education by 2 percent over the next two years. This will help make sure all students and teachers across the state, and in our school district, receive the support they need.
  • We successfully worked to prevent cuts to health care, securing health care access for 1.2 million Minnesotans who can't afford health care on the individual market.
  • We approved a .25% tax cut for the middle class, which is progress toward securing a fairer tax system for working families and retired folks.

Working across the aisle to find common ground and invest in healthcare, education, and community prosperity.

We are still finalizing the details of our budget in committees and work groups, which will give Minnesotans an opportunity to weigh in on these policies. The schedule for these meetings is available here, and you can read more about the budget agreement here. We are on track for an orderly end to the legislative session that made sustainable investments in affordable health care and college, strong public schools, safe communities, and economic security for individuals and families.  We can adjourn knowing that we got the job done for Minnesota and that we are making progress towards building a state that works for all of us.

Sincerely,

Hunter Cantrell
