Rep. Tabke’s ‘Lawns to Legumes’ funding passes first committee hurdle

Thursday, January 12, 2023

St. Paul, MN - Yesterday, the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy committee heard legislation (HF 207) to continue funding the popular Lawns to Legumes program, which assists homeowners who want to convert their lawns to pollinator-friendly habitat. Authored by Rep. Brad Tabke (DFL - Shakopee), the bill passed through the committee on a voice vote.

“Thousands of Minnesotans across the state have participated in the successful Lawns to Legumes program,” said Rep. Tabke. “Pollinators are vital to our food and plant production, and help sustain our ecosystems and natural resources. I encourage everyone to learn more about how they can make a difference in preserving our pollinator population.”

Established in 2019, the Lawns to Legumes program offers a combination of workshops, coaching, planting guides and cost-share funding (individual support grants) for installing pollinator-friendly native plantings in residential lawns. More information can be found on the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources website

The bill will next be heard in the Ways and Means Committee. Video of today’s hearing is available on the House Public Information YouTube channel
