February Town Hall Details

Monday, February 3, 2020

Rep. Claflin

Dear neighbors,

I hope that the new year is treating you well! The 2020 legislative session begins next week, so I’ve been busy connecting with people in the community to talk about what we hope to accomplish together. With that in mind, I’m hosting several town halls this month. The first one will be held in Cottage Grove this Saturday, February 8. Sen. Karla Bigham, Rep. Tony Jurgens, and I will listen to your feedback and answer questions about the upcoming session.

Sen. Matt Klein and Rep. Rick Hansen will join Sen. Bigham and I for a town hall in South St. Paul later that day.

Sen. Bigham and I are also hosting two town halls on Saturday, February 22. The first one will take place in Newport, and the second one will be in St. Paul Park. I hope you can join us at one of these upcoming events!

Be a Voter in the 2020 Presidential Primary

This year, Minnesotans will select candidates for President in a primary election. No matter what your party affiliation is, it’s important to cast your vote!

Our state’s presidential primary is on March 3. However, absentee balloting has already begun, meaning that Minnesotans can be among the first in the nation to cast their votes. You can request an absentee ballot or update your voter registration here. If you have any questions about the presidential primary process, the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office has answers to a number of frequently asked questions here.

Local Projects Included in Governor Walz’s Local Jobs and Projects Act

In the upcoming legislative session, I’m committed to securing a robust, regionally-balanced package of investments in Minnesota’s higher education institutions, roads and bridges, parks and trails, water treatment facilities, and other important assets, including many in our region. Governor Walz recently released a list of recommended projects for capital investment. I’m grateful that he included several projects in our area!

The first is a grant to the City of South St. Paul to revitalize the Concord Street corridor. It will be used to replace streetlights and storm sewers. The second project is an expansion of the Ramsey/Washington Recycling and Energy Center in Newport. The funding will go towards modifying the existing building, expanding the tipping floor, and installing a processing line so compostable products can be recovered mechanically. I’m grateful that Governor Walz recognized the importance of these local projects, and I will continue advocating for them as the House crafts its own recommendations.

South Washington County Schools Receive No Child Left Inside Grant

Last session I supported legislation that created No Child Left Inside, a grant program that helps get Minnesota kids and teens outdoors. I’m thrilled that the South Washington County School District received one of the first grants! The funds will be used to take Park High School students to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. A full list of the 60 initiatives that received No Child Left Inside grants during the first phase of the program is available here. You can read more about some of these projects and the program’s success here.

Community Events and Activities

More than 100 Minnesotans came to Dodge Nature Center for a community conversation with the Climate Action Caucus last month. We had a great discussion about how climate change is impacting Minnesota’s natural resources and solutions going forward. I’m looking forward to using ideas and insight from these community conversations when the Legislature reconvenes. If you’d like to receive emails about our upcoming events, please sign up here.

I recently attended a South St. Paul Local Issues meeting. People working at all levels of government shared updates and information, and we discussed a variety of issues that are important to our community. Working with city, state, and federal officials has been a pleasure, and I’m looking forward to continuing our work this year.

I always enjoy making people feel welcome at our State Capitol, so I had a great time at Cottage Grove Day on the Hill. It’s a privilege to work here and to share the art and architecture with visitors. Thank you to everyone who came!
