Legislative Update - Changing Times

Friday, February 25, 2022

Dear neighbors,

I’ve decided not to run for a third term in the Minnesota House. The decision has nothing to do with redistricting, national or state politics, or the requirements of another election and another term in office. I’ve just decided the work may be carried on by the dedication, idealism, and thoughtful sense of history that I hope inspire others to this office.

In 2018, I promised to work on a long list of concerns, the most pressing of which were nurturing and challenging schools, stewardship of our fragile environment, accessible and affordable health care for all, and attention to our public safety.

There’s been some success and satisfaction. I’ve carried bills resulting in aquafer recharge and water storage, supporting the Post-Secondary Option Program for high school students, grants for the Minnesota Council on Economic Education, and an appropriation to the State Auditor’s Office for a school district auditing project. I’ve had a hand in others influencing policies in both early childhood and post-secondary education, safeguarding mining practices, environmental protection, support for labor, the state grant program helping students pay for college, bonding projects in Washington County, and K-12 funding.

I’m optimistic about several new bills on which I’m working now. House File 3114 would strengthen and expand school-based health centers, another would support career and technical education, and three bills propose new bonding, tax policy and practices for Woodbury. A dozen others are waiting to be heard in House committees.

There have been some disappointments. I worked hard for K-12 education finance reform (including a 20% property tax reduction), firearm safety, and education innovation but haven’t been able to make meaningful progress. The Legislature often moves very slowly.

It’s been a distinct honor to represent this legislative district and to help influence the direction of state government. Our state’s future, of course, depends on citizens dedicated to a respectful and tolerant society—goals that are always vulnerable to partisanship and division. We have to keep believing in the appeal and resilience of democracy.

Thanks to all of you for the opportunity you’ve given me, the wonderful support from so many of you, and the candid expression of differences others have offered. I’ll still be around for a while, so give me a call or send a note with your ideas, thoughts, and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Steve Sandell
State Representative
