First Day of Session Legislative Update

Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Rep. Sandell

Dear Neighbor,

The Legislature returns to St. Paul this week for the 2020 session. We hope to build on the momentum we built last year in addressing prescription drug prices, ensuring Minnesotans have access to paid family and medical leave, enacting common-sense solutions to prevent gun violence, and ensuring economic security for families and communities across the state - that includes giving significant consideration to early childhood education.

I'm looking forward to getting to work. I enjoyed meeting many of you and hearing about your hopes for our community at our town hall over the weekend. Your input helps shape our work at the Capitol.

If you don't believe that, here is an example of the way your input matters. The very first telephone call I received when I took office a year ago was about the a constituent’s Home Owners Association (HOA). That phone call has led to two bills that I’ll introduce this week—one will allow anyone required to make payments to an HOA to have access to the organization’s governing and financial records; the other will create an Ombudsperson’s office to answer questions and provide a method for resolving disputes with HOAs. I'm glad I got the call!

I strongly believe that the fundamental elements of good legislation, and the responsibilities of legislators, are cooperation, discussion and compromise in government. Writing bills, making promises and giving speeches have little meaning unless we can work together—Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservative—for the benefit of all Minnesotans. That will be my number one goal for this legislative session.

Keep in touch!

Sincerely,

Rep. Steve Sandell
