Legislative Update

Monday, May 20, 2019

Neighbors,

This week, we demonstrated that one of the country's two governments split between two parties can find compromise and common ground to build a state that works better for all Minnesotans.

Last night, the Governor and leaders from the House and Senate announced a budget that preserves health care funding for over 1 million Minnesotans and makes important investments in education. Here are some details:
  • We increase investments in each student by 2 percent in each of the next two years. This will help make sure students across the state receive the same level of support, so we don't perpetuate a patchwork of haves and have-nots.
  • We successfully worked to prevent  cuts to health care, securing health care access for 1.2 million Minnesotans.
  • We approved a .25% tax cut for the middle class.
  • We strengthened our investment in broadband, so that all people and small businesses throughout the state can stay plugged in and connected.
We're still finalizing the details of the budget in committees and work groups, which will give the public a chance to weigh in. The schedule for these is available here, and you can read more about the budget agreement here.  I'm glad that we're on track for an orderly end to the legislative session, and we can adjourn knowing that we moved Minnesota forward for our students, families, seniors, small businesses, farmers, and all those who need a hand up.

Sincerely,

Rep. Steve Sandell
