Legislative Update- May 22, 2020

Friday, May 22, 2020

Rep. Klevorn

Dear Neighbors,

The 2020 regular legislative session has come to a close- we adjourned on the constitutionally required deadline on Sunday, May 18.

I’d like to take a moment to thank all of you—our Plymouth neighbors—for your input and advocacy on the important issues facing our community. This work wouldn’t be possible without constructive feedback and ideas, and I’m grateful we all share the collective goal to keep moving Plymouth and Minnesota forward.

Overall, I’m proud that lawmakers worked together to quickly respond to a global pandemic, with emergency funding for public health, resources for health care workers, aid for child care, housing and food security measures, small business assistance and more. We also enacted into law significant non-COVID-19 legislation such as the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act, the Prescription Drug Price Transparency Act, Tobacco 21 legislation to prevent youth smoking, and a bipartisan bill to protect the safety and security of elections.

A public works jobs and local projects bill did not make it across the finish line, but I am hopeful there will be an agreement soon. Should we reconvene for a June special session, I will continue advocating for the inclusion of the Plymouth Creek Center project, and overall, a regionally balanced and robust bill that can help stimulate Minnesota’s economy, and bring local jobs to our community and beyond.

Honoring Our Fallen Soldiers

As we pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation this weekend, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs is sponsoring a Virtual Memorial Day Program. TPT has created a 30-minute Memorial Day program entitled “Always Remember: A Minnesota Tribute to Veterans We’ve Lost,” that will be broadcast across the state on TPT’s Minnesota Channel on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and live streamed on TPT’s website.

Save the Date!

Next Saturday, May 30, I’ll be participating in a virtual “Health, Wellness, and Democracy” panel discussion with fellow West Metro legislators, including our U.S. Representative Dean Phillips. You’re invited to tune in on my Facebook page, where the event will be live streamed.

Stay in Touch

Although session’s adjourned, the work doesn’t stop! House Speaker Hortman has created a Select Committee on Minnesota’s Pandemic Response and Rebuilding to act on continuing COVID-19 issues. The first meeting was held this week to hear from nurses about their concerns for workplace safety. You can watch the hearing here
