Legislative Update- July 24, 2019

Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful weather we’re having! A big thank you to all who attended Music in Plymouth and took a moment to talk with me. There was excellent turnout and I appreciated all of the thoughtful questions and constructive input.

The City of Plymouth recently held an open house to share proposed plans and gather community input on the Plymouth Creek Community Center renovations. Our regional asset is one to be proud of and I’m glad we’re working to meet the needs of our growing community. I’ll continue to advocate for state funding in a future capital investment or ‘bonding’ bill.

Hands-Free Law Goes into Effect August 1

Beginning next Thursday, August 1, Minnesota will become the 17th state to require drivers to use handheld devices in ‘hands free’ mode, with one touch activation. There are some exceptions with emergency situations. With distracted driving injuries and fatalities on the rise (approximately 53 deaths and 216 serious injuries year in Minnesota), I'm glad we're taking steps forward to help combat these dangerous habits behind the wheel. I’m committed to ensuring our community stays informed about the new law because all Minnesotans deserve to be safe on our roadways. I recently spoke with Plymouth Police Chief Goldstein about the new law and what we can expect. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has also put together helpful tips and frequently asked questions related to going ‘hands-free’.
