Legislative Update – November 23, 2021

Tuesday, November 23, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving! We’re still facing many challenges, but there are also plenty of reasons to have gratitude this time of year. I’m thankful to be your representative and am glad to have connected with many of you throughout the past year. I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.

COVID-19 Update

Unfortunately, COVID-19 continues to spread rapidly in Minnesota with few signs of the pandemic lightening up. Cases continue to increase while our health care system is facing enormous pressure. Minnesota Public Radio highlighted the difficulties many hospitals are encountering in delivering timely emergency care and response.

If you haven’t yet done so, please get your COVID-19 vaccine. It not only helps prevent the virus from spreading, but significantly reduces the risk of serious illness or hospitalization. A full map of locations offering the vaccine, which is free, is available here.

To extend the efficacy of the vaccine, the CDC is now recommending booster shots for adults who received their initial series of the vaccine six months ago or longer. Information on boosters is available here. Additionally, please continue to follow precautions such as staying home when you’re sick, wearing a mask around others, and getting tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms. Free testing remains available, and information and locations are available here.

House Capital Investment Committee Tour

Last week, the Minnesota House Capital Investment Committee wrapped up its statewide tour of Minnesota which included a stop in our community. In Arden Hills, fellow legislators had the opportunity to learn about proposed improvements to the community trail network which will improve safety for students who bike or walk to Mounds View High School, Bethel University, and Valentine Hills Elementary. The people counting on this most - students - shared how dangerous the area currently is.

Overall, the lawmakers made more than 80 visits to sites of proposed public infrastructure improvements including colleges and universities, public safety facilities, water treatment plants, roads and bridges, parks and trails, community centers, agency offices and more. I’m hopeful we can work together next legislative session to invest in a sizable package of investments in projects that improve Minnesotans’ quality of life while creating new economic opportunities.

ULC Commendation

ULC Commendation Certificate

I was recently honored to receive a Certificate of Commendation from the Uniform Law Commission for my work to enact the Uniform Recognition and Enforcement of Canadian Domestic Violence Protection Orders Act. This past legislative session, I was proud to work with the ULC on this important legislation, the unanimous passage of which means Minnesota will join several other states and provinces in recognizing and enforcing orders for protection from other jurisdictions. I'm grateful to the ULC for their recognition!

Mounds View Holiday Lights Map

Driving with a cup of hot coffee or cocoa to check out holiday lights is a tradition many families enjoy. The communities of Mounds View, Shoreview, Arden Hills, New Brighton and Roseville are all once again putting together a Holiday Lights Map for North Metro residents. If you’re planning to decorate your home and/or yard for the holidays, please consider adding yourself to the map. Prizes will be awarded to the top four most impressive displays!
