Legislative Update - March 4, 2019

Monday, March 4, 2019

Neighbors,

I want to thank the community members who came out to support the driver’s license legislation last week. The hearings had a huge turnout and it was clear that so many Minnesotans are looking out for one another. It’s critical for the safety and vitality of our communities that all people, regardless of their status, are able to get a driver’s license. Denying immigrants the right to a driver’s license means we’re denying people living in our communities access to jobs and opportunities, endangering public safety, and criminalizing families’ efforts to participate in civic life. It’s time to make our roads safer and more inclusive.

Governor Walz Releases “One Minnesota Bonding Bill”
Governor Walz last week released his capital investment proposal, which he calls the “One Minnesota Bonding Bill.”

His plan invests in priorities that all Minnesotans care about, including affordable housing, education, public safety, and transportation. With 22 percent of projects in Greater Minnesota, 27 percent in the Twin Cities area, and 51 percent having impacts statewide, his plan is designed to increase economic opportunity for all Minnesotans, no matter your zip code. A fact sheet with more information is available here.

The governor’s budget makes historic investments in schools to close the funding gap and make sure every child has a good teacher, can receive individual attention, and access to the materials they need to compete in today's economy. Higher education also needs to be a priority for the State. We are working to ensure investments in our Minnesota colleges and universities keep college affordable for all Minnesota students. I am hopeful that my bills (H.F. 977 and H.F. 1695) along with others to support low-income high school graduates in attending college will be a part of the solution.

 Meeting with Constituents
We had a high-energy, busy week last week, from students to unions coming to talk about issues that matter to Minnesotans, ranging from more teachers of color, paid sick and safe time and more.
