Legislative Update - Addressing Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

Friday, March 11, 2022

Dear neighbors,

I hope this message finds you and your family well. My colleagues and I are hard at work at the Capitol and in our communities. We recently received a new economic forecast, and we’re using these projections to guide our work.

New Economic Forecast

According to the economic forecast that Minnesota Management and Budget released last week, Minnesota has a historic budget surplus of $9.25 billion. While this is good news, we know that Minnesotans are still struggling, including many of the workers who helped drive our state’s economic recovery.

As the legislative session continues, I will advocate for bills that improve Minnesotans’ lives and prioritize the needs of working families, children, students, and small businesses. The budget surplus gives us the resources to help people overcome challenges and thrive, now and into the future.

Addressing Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

My thoughts are with the people of Ukraine as they continue to defend their country and democracy from an unlawful Russian invasion. While the Minnesota Legislature doesn’t have jurisdiction over foreign policy, we’re doing what we can to support Ukraine and Minnesota’s Ukrainian community. A bipartisan group of legislators came together yesterday to introduce legislation to divest Minnesota’s state pension fund from Russia. The bill would also codify an Executive Order Governor Walz issued recently that bars state agencies from contracting with Russian companies.
