Legislative Update - Resources for Families with Children

Thursday, November 4, 2021

Dear neighbors,

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and staying warm!

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. This is a great opportunity to honor the many cultures, contributions, and experiences of Indigenous people and to commit to supporting Indigenous people and communities year-round.

It’s also a good time to visit the Our Home: Native Minnesota exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. This exhibit shares the stories of Indigenous people who’ve lived in this area for thousands of years and are still here today. Museum admission and parking will be free this Saturday, November 6 as the Minnesota History Center recognizes American Indian Community Day. Visitors will have a chance to see the exhibit and learn more through activities, readings, and events throughout the day.

COVID-19 Vaccines Available for 5-11 Year Olds

5- to 11-year-old children are eligible to get vaccinated now that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine has received federal approval. More than 1,100 providers are prepared to offer the vaccine to young Minnesotans, and most of them will start administering vaccines this week. A new webpage, mn.gov/vaxforkids, can help families find a provider and answer any questions they may have about the vaccine. Parents and guardians can also check if their pediatrician, family medicine clinic, or pharmacy has appointments available or watch for vaccination clinics at schools and other community sites.

Resources for Families with Young Children

The Help Me Connect webpage is a great resource for families with young children and pregnant Minnesotans. It was designed to connect parents with children from birth to eight years old with a variety of services, including developmental screenings, early learning and child care, disability services, and more. I encourage you to check it out and to spread the word to others who might find this tool useful.

Make Your Voice Heard

Apply for State Boards, Councils, and Commissions

Serving on a state board, council, or commission is a great way to make your voice heard. These groups are responsible for things like advising the Governor and the Legislature, overseeing professional licensing, and protecting our environment. Nearly 100 of them are accepting applications right now!

You can find a list of current openings on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. I encourage you to apply if you find one that interests you.

If you have any questions about my work or the resources available in our community, please feel free to reach out. You can email me at rep.ami.wazlawik@house.mn or call (651) 296-3018.

Sincerely,

Ami Wazlawik
