Thursday, March 05, 2020

Rep. Wazlawik

Dear neighbors,

I hope you’re having a great week! Here’s an update from the State Capitol:

Paid Family and Medical Leave

Far too many people are forced to choose between work and taking care of themselves or a loved one. Tonight, my colleagues and I will vote on paid family and medical leave, a measure that would help millions of hardworking Minnesotans and their families live and work with dignity. Paid family and medical leave gives Minnesota workers time to bond with a new baby, help an aging parent, or care for a sick child. It also helps small businesses attract and retain employees and compete with larger employers.

I look forward to supporting paid family and medical leave this evening! If you’d like to watch the debate on this bill, you can tune in live here starting at 3:30 p.m.

Coronavirus Update

Several community members have asked me what our state is doing to address the spread of COVID-19, commonly referred to as the coronavirus. First of all, I want to assure you that Minnesota is well prepared to respond to an outbreak. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is in constant contact with the Legislature, hospitals, clinics, and providers and preparing to test patients for the condition.

While there are currently no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Minnesota, experts believe it’s not a matter of “if” but “when.” There are a few basic precautions we can all take to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The best guidance is to take the same precautions you’d use to avoid colds and flu:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Cover your cough with your sleeve or a tissue, not your hand.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home if you’re sick.

I will share news and updates from MDH as I receive them. The latest information about COVID-19 and how you can protect yourself is available here.

One of my favorite parts of the legislative session is meeting with people who come to the State Capitol to fight for what they believe in! Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with Ed and Carolyn Wensman, Lori Delahunt, and Jane Bacon, community members who came to support criminal background checks and extreme risk protection orders.

I know in-person meetings aren’t realistic for everyone, but please don’t hesitate to touch base on issues that are important to you. You can contact me at rep.ami.wazlawik@house.mn or 651-296-3018. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Ami Wazlawik
State Representative
