Legislative Update - April 5, 2019

Friday, April 5, 2019

Dear neighbors,

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to attend Governor Tim Walz’s first State of the State address. The governor focused on the stories of Minnesotans throughout his speech. I appreciated Governor Walz’s emphasis on the people behind each policy that we make and the importance of lifting up their voices. A video of his speech is available here.

It was your stories, and those of your neighbors and other community members, that inspired me to introduce a ban on the use of TCE (HF 2276). On Monday, I shared one of those stories while asking my colleagues to support the bill. I’m happy to share that the legislation passed the House with broad, bipartisan support!

Agriculture and Food Budget

As a member of the Agriculture and Food Finance and Policy Division, I’ve spent months working on initiatives to support our farmers and ensure that all Minnesotans have access to healthy food. Yesterday I was able to cast my vote for a budget that will do just that (HF 2200).

The agriculture and food budget would invest in additional funding for farmer mental health, innovative research and development, and programs that connect schools with food produced in Minnesota. It also includes one of my proposals, which would provide food grown or raised by Minnesota farmers to food shelves (HF 1096). This would benefit farmers and allow many people to access fresh produce that they couldn’t otherwise afford.

You can learn more by watching the first public hearing on our budget here.

Thank you for your interest in the work that we do at the Capitol and for sharing your stories, opinions, and questions. It’s an honor to serve as a voice for our community. Please stay in touch!

Sincerely,

Ami Wazlawik
State Representative
