Legislative Update from Rep. John Heinrich

Monday, February 21, 2022

Friends,

I’ve had a busy start to this year’s session. Currently I am working on several bills that I believe will make our lives and community better. Public safety is still at the top of my priority list, as I’m sure it is for you too. The calls for defunding the police have made our streets less safe.  We need more measures in place to hold criminals accountable. I am working on a personal protection law. This would allow for lifetime carry permits and reduce permit fees. As a veteran, I value firearm safety and I believe you have the right to protect yourself and your family.

We’ve seen how the Walz/Biden agenda and policies have hurt Minnesotans and people across the country. Right now, we need more tax relief and lower costs at the grocery stores and gas pump (to name a few). Everything is more expensive. The cost-of-living in Minnesota is skyrocketing. I am working on legislation to create more options for us as consumers and end the governmental overreach we have endured for far too long.

I wanted to tell you about the latest regarding the Unemployment Fund. Our unemployment fund was depleted throughout the pandemic, and we owe the federal government more than $1 billion in debt. I am backing legislation that would restore this fund to solvency. I want to fix that fund and now is the time for tax relief. The almost $8 billion surplus is not government money— it’s yours.  Unfortunately, democrats are backing bills that would increase taxes for our business owners for the next six years.

I’ve had lots of questions regarding redistricting maps which were released last week. The district has changed but I am still here for you as your representative in St. Paul. My priority is to make sure you are heard and have access to what you need to make the best decisions for yourself and for your family.

Finally, I am grateful to serve you and our community and the State of Minnesota. I am optimistic that we can accomplish some great things this session as we work together. Please reach out if you need anything.
