RELEASE: Heinrich statement on Highway 47 railroad crossing, governor's gas tax proposal

Wednesday, March 20, 2019

ST. PAUL, MN – This session, Rep. John Heinrich (R-Anoka) is authoring legislation to provide funding to construct a bridge over the railroad at the Highway 47/Ferry Street railroad crossing in Anoka. The construction of the overpass would improve safety and substantially shorten travel times and wait times at this intersection.

On Tuesday, Governor Walz visited Anoka to push for this project as well as to reiterate his calls for a 20 cent per gallon gas tax increase.

Following the governor’s visit, Rep. Heinrich issued the following statement:

I’ve been working hard with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address the need for a bridge at this dangerous railroad intersection. I’m pleased to see this project has received the attention of the governor and appears to be near the top of his administration’s transportation to-do list. While I agree with him on this project’s urgency and importance, allocating funding for it does not require increasing gas taxes or other fees. Instead, it can be funded through other Republican-backed options such as the dedication of existing auto parts sales tax revenue. I look forward to working with the governor, MNDOT, and other legislators in the coming months to get this project done without burdening Minnesotans with a gas tax hike.
