Legislative Update- March 8, 2019

Friday, March 8, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

As week nine of the legislative session comes to a close, so many exciting things have been happening in St. Paul! Here are a few of the top updates:

I recently posted a quick update of some of my pharmacy bills on social media. I am committed to putting people and families first, and to work towards giving them access to affordable health care and prescriptions. You can watch the video here.

Capitol Visitors

I loved meeting with Osseo Area Schools Choir this week. We talked about the Capitol and making laws, and how we need more girls in government. One student was so excited to learn we are voting on the Equal Rights Amendment legislation on her birthday!

Thursday morning, I met with Maple Grove Police Department and City Staff who attended the Capital Investment Committee to testify in support of expanding the North Metro Range regional public safety training facility. I am sponsoring the bipartisan bill to fund the facility improvements. Thanks to everyone who came out to support this important bill, including Rep. Robbins.

Minnesota House Approves Equal Rights Amendment

I’m committed to ensuring all Minnesotans have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. In fact, the Minnesota House DFL Majority is nearly gender balanced. As we recognize March 2019 as Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate our trailblazing female legislators and partner with female leaders throughout the state to build a Minnesota that works better for all of us.

The roots of National Women’s History Month go back to March 8, 1857, when women from various New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. The first Women's Day Celebration in the United States was also in New York City in 1909, but Congress did not establish National Women's History Week until 1981 to be commemorated annually during the second week of March. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women’s History Month, and the president has issued a proclamation.

Minnesota women deserve equal rights in all aspects of life. All Minnesotans should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of gender. Yesterday, the House met and approved an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) ballot question to let Minnesotans decide whether or not to give everyone full equality under our State Constitution. I’m a proud co-sponsor look forward to bring this historic legislation to the people of Minnesota to decide.  After nears 100 years since women won the right to vote it is time that the voices of women and all Minnesotans be heard loud and clear.

Upcoming Town Hall

I am pleased to announce that my first town hall has been scheduled! It will take place on March 24th at the Maple Grove Library at 2:00 p.m. with Majority Leader Ryan Winkler joining the conversation. Both of us will be available to address any questions, comments, or concerns you have regarding this legislative session.

Sincerely,

Kristin Bahner
State Representative
