Legislative Update- April 12, 2019

Friday, April 12, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

Committees have wrapped up their budget bills and we’re preparing for longer floor sessions to fully vet and discuss the various proposals within each budget area.

Next week, we’ll observe Easter and Passover, so I’ll be back in the district and look forward to connecting with neighbors, friends, and family.

Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Hands-Free Cell Phone Bill Signed into Law

Governor Tim Walz today signed the ‘hands free’ legislation into law this morning, making Minnesota the 17th state, plus the District of Columbia, to require a ‘hands free’ device while driving. The law goes into effect beginning August 1, 2019. Whether you drive, walk or bike, this law will help keep more Minnesotans safe. I was honored to support the final compromise bill on the House Floor this week when it passed 107-19.

Protecting Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources

The Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division and the Water Division, both of which I'm a member, spent months discussing ways to protect, restore, and enhance our environment and abundant natural resources. Our budget (HF 2209) would reduce the use of toxic chemicals and pollutants; strengthen protections for fish, wildlife, our bodies of water, and pollinators; support efforts to research and control invasive species; and fund outdoor environmental and ecological programs for children.

Our lakes are one of our greatest community assets, which is why I’m pleased that my bill to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species has been included in the final bill. ‘Lawns to Legumes’ has also been incorporated. While negotiations are expected to take place to reconcile differences with the Senate, I will do all I can to keep it included.

Constituent Spotlight
Constituents and tireless environmental activists Diane Tessari and Sandy Ahlstrom visited this week to advocate for clean water in Minnesota!

Upcoming Listening Session

I’m hosting an upcoming community listening session to listen to concerns, answer questions, and share updates from the Capitol. The listening session is scheduled for:
  • Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Shorewood Community Center, 5735 Country Club Rd, Excelsior, MN 55331
Everyone is invited to attend and bring questions and comments!

Keep in Touch

If you can’t make it to the Shorewood Community Center Tuesday evening, I hope you’ll continue to call, write and send emails. I appreciate and value your feedback.

Have a wonderful Easter or Passover holiday!

Sincerely,
Kelly
