Legislative Update- March 20, 2019

Wednesday, March 20, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

The pace continues to pick up as we work toward our deadline to adjourn on May 20.

Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Bipartisan Measures for Minnesotans Approved in House

On Monday, we approved a couple bills that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. These are:

HF 400, the bill which would establish an Opioid Stewardship Advisory Council to fund addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery services. These services will be funded by grants from a new Opioid Stewardship Fund, resources for which would come from fees paid by pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors. You can review the remarks I made on the House Floor here.
HF 50, the ‘hands-free’ bill, which prohibits handheld devices while driving, except in one-touch mode and some emergency situations. With distracted driving fatalities on the rise, this is a good preventative approach to help save more lives.

Addressing our Infrastructure Needs

This week a bill of mine received a public hearing in the Capital Investment Committee. The legislation would make critical investments for repairs to the Northome Bridge. Deephaven Mayor Pro Tem Steve Erickson, City Administrator Dana Young and Bridge Consultant Jim Archer provided expert testimony on why this project is needed.

Lawns to Legumes

My bill that would deliver local grants to communities to plant lawns, with native vegetation and pollinator friendly forbs and legumes was recently covered in the Star Tribune. You can read more about the proposal and find the article here.

Almanac at the Capitol-Tonight!

Tune in to TPT’s segment of ‘Almanac at the Capitol’ this evening at 7:00 p.m. I’ll be on the show with Senator Scott Jensen where we’ll be discussing various health care proposals at the legislature and measures taken to address the opioid crisis. You can learn more about the show here.

Constituent Spotlight

I recently met with Allison Kraus, Tyler Hirth and Drew Dewitt—all constituents who work in the insurance industry. I learned a lot about the industry and some of the challenges they face. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit!

Stay in Touch

We’re over the halfway mark of the legislative session. Please reach out with any questions, comments or ideas about how we can keep moving our community and state forward.

I appreciate hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Kelly
