Legislative Update- February 20, 2019

Wednesday, February 20, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

I hope you’re having a great week. I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation focusing on health care affordability and accessibility, and protecting the environment and our bodies of water. Of note, my bill “Lawns to Legumes” was recently introduced. It would deliver local grants to communities to plant lawns, with native vegetation and pollinator friendly forbs and legumes. This will help protect our pollinators and maintain clean lakes and bodies of water. HF 776 awaits a committee hearing in the Environment and Natural Resources Finance Division.

You can find my bills and read more about them here.

Governor Walz’s Budget Recommendations

The Governor released his two-year budget recommendation for Minnesota on Tuesday. The budget components within his plan focus on delivering affordable and accessible health care, high quality education, and economic prosperity. While I’m still reviewing all of the recommendations, I am excited to see the Governor’s commitment to deliver an additional public health care option, called ONECare for all Minnesotans who choose to opt in.

Protecting Minnesotans from Elder Abuse

The Health and Human Services Policy Committee heard emotional testimony from Minnesotans regarding elder abuse of their parents and loved ones. HF 90 would institute several protections against abuse, neglect, assault, and other forms of maltreatment in assisted living facilities as well as nursing homes. All our aging neighbors and loved ones deserve to be safe and live with dignity. I am glad to support this bill and see it advance.

Constituent Spotlight

Last week, I had a wonderful morning with community members and Mound City Councilmember Sherrie Pugh supporting Western Communities Action Network (WeCAN) at the Mound American Legion. WeCAN is a community nonprofit that helps families achieve stability through emergency assistance to food support and can also assist with job skill training. We were surrounded by great fellowship, food, and conversation. Thanks for hosting, Mound American Legion!
