Rep. Lippert introduces the Future Fuels Act, receives informational hearing

Thursday, March 11, 2021

St. Paul, MN - Today, the House Climate and Energy Finance and Policy Committee held an informational hearing on House File 2083, the Future Fuels Act, authored by State Representative Todd Lippert (DFL - Northfield). The legislation establishes a standard in reducing the carbon intensity of transportation fuels in Minnesota.

“Minnesota is no longer meeting its climate goals, and to get back on track we need to start addressing greenhouse gas emissions across our economy, especially in the areas like transportation where emissions have not decreased,” said Rep. Lippert. “Beyond lowering carbon emissions, reducing the carbon intensity of fuels will drive investment in emerging clean fuel technologies, improve soil health for our farmers, and support clean air and public health.”

The carbon intensity of fuel refers to the quantity of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions associated with a unit of a specific transportation fuel. The standards set by this bill would reduce the carbon intensity of fuel by at least 20% by the year 2035. The legislation is supported by a diverse coalition of agriculture, environmental, scientific, electric vehicle, biofuel, and climate advocates and organizations, many of whom provided testimony during today’s informational hearing.

No action was taken on the legislation, which will receive its first actionable hearing in the House Commerce Finance and Policy Committee. Information on today’s hearing, including a list of testifiers and letters of support, can be found on the Climate and Energy committee’s webpage.
