Rep. Lippert Votes for Minnesota Police Accountability Act of 2020

Friday, June 19, 2020

SAINT PAUL, Minnesota — Early Friday Morning, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the Minnesota Police Accountability Act of 2020. The racial justice and police accountability legislation – authored by members of the People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus – is aimed at reimagining and reforming public safety in the state. State Representative Todd Lippert (DFL - Northfield) voted in favor of the legislation.

"Since the murder of George Floyd, Minnesotans across race, and across the entire state, have been crying out for a different future for our state.  We want a state where black and brown communities can breathe, move, and thrive.  Any true response must come through systemic change in how Minnesota facilitates public safety,” said Rep. Lippert. “Through conversations in committee and our community, the conflicts and inequities in our current system have been laid bare. The solutions I supported today, brought forward by the experiences and expertise of my colleagues in the POCI Caucus, will help bring about a more just and equitable Minnesota.”

The series of criminal justice and police accountability reforms were introduced following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis Police Officer this Memorial Day.
