Legislative Update - January 25, 2019

Friday, January 25, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

It has been a busy few weeks at the State Capitol. From committee hearings to floor sessions to other legislative events around the capitol, it has not been lost on me what a privilege it is to be here, and I thank you for your support. I hope to use these updates as a way to keep you informed of our work here in St. Paul, and I hope you use them as an opportunity to reach out to me with your comments and questions.

Committee Assignments

For the 2019-2020 biennium, I will be serving as the Vice Chair of the House Long-Term Care Division. I will also be serving on the House agriculture, environment, labor, and state government finance committees. You can read more about mine and other House committees here.

Prescription Drug Repository Program

My first bill as a state representative has been introduced, and I wanted to share it with you. House File 182 would establish a prescription drug repository, and I’m happy to say it has bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. It’s currently waiting for a hearing in the Health and Human Services Policy committee, but I look forward to sharing updates on this a future legislation with you.

Claiming Our Voices

This last weekend I had the honor of speaking at ISAIAH MN's Claiming Our Voices event with Governor Tim Walz and Majority Leader Ryan Winkler. ISAIAH MN is a coalition of faith communities committed to racial and economic equity and climate justice, and I spoke about how we formed our Minnesota Values Plan. Out of the thousands of conversations we had with Minnesotans, we heard one value expressed again and again: Minnesotans care about one another. This is who we are as Minnesotans. It is our best self as a state. I shared with this group of people of faith that as a pastor, I hear a sacred value expressed. I hear: Minnesotans love their neighbors, and we need policies that will create an increasingly just and whole state. This is what we will be working on as a DFL caucus in the House.
