Dear Granite City Neighbors,

The 2024 Legislative Session is practically here! The Minnesota House of Representatives will reconvene on Monday, February 12th at noon.

As I head back to the Capitol for the legislative session, I’m feeling refreshed and eager to work with my colleagues on both the DFL and GOP sides of the aisle to get things done for St. Cloud.

Through my leadership position of Speaker Pro Tempore, I will continue to shine a bright light on the needs of our community, and work tenaciously hard to deliver results for the people I represent.

I’ll continue to serve on the following committees this session:

Committee Assignments

Here’s what I’ve been up to during my final week home before heading to St. Paul:

“Donuts with Dan” Recap

I want to thank everyone who joined me at my “Donuts with Dan” open office hours event. It was great to get feedback on a wide variety of topics and answer questions as I prepare to return to the Minnesota House next week. The donuts were delicious!

I love doing town halls, but this open office hours format is also invaluable, because people feel more comfortable sharing in a one-on-one setting which allows for thoughtful and informative interactions. Turnout was so high, we went into overtime!

If you weren’t able to attend, I am always happy to set up individual constituent meetings.

“From the Capitol” Radio Interview

Be sure to tune in to WJON every Wednesday at 10:40am, when I join Kelly Cordes to discuss the latest legislative news. This week we talked about the things I learned at “Donuts with Dan," affordable housing, bringing a medical school to St. Cloud, and more!

You can catch our conversation here.

Building Solutions to Minnesota’s Housing Crisis

This week, I met with Wanda Schroeder and Peter Cluever at the Central Minnesota Builders Association to discuss solutions to Minnesota’s housing crisis. Every Minnesotan belongs in a home that is safe and affordable, yet more than 600,000 Minnesotans are paying more than 30% of their income on housing costs.

At the root of this housing crisis is an extreme housing shortage. Decades of underinvestment and exclusionary housing policies have left our state with a gap of more than 100,000 homes we need to build. I am proud to partner with CMBA to lower the cost of new construction and help more Minnesotans achieve the dream of homeownership!

Supporting Local Businesses

A major piece of legislation I’m authoring this year would invest in the revitalization of downtown St. Cloud, a project that will be an incredible benefit to our local businesses and all St. Cloud residents. I stopped by Flat Iron Nutrition to grab a couple of protein shakes and give owner Dylan Wirtzfeld a quick update on this legislation.

The shakes were delicious and nutritious as always, 10/10 recommend!
