REP. MUNSON: STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF MDH’S 2.0 COVID-19 MODEL

Monday, May 11, 2020

[ST. PAUL, MN] - Representative Jeremy Munson (23B- Lake Crystal) commented today in response to the Minnesota Department of Health’s April 28th revision of the COVID-19 epidemiological model, released today.

“Today’s sloppy release of a 2.0 model revision by this administration shows that they are desperately trying to find a way to justify their destructive’ stay at home order’ that is destroying jobs and the economy.

Moreover, their model shows that we are not saving lives—it shows that the longer we are shut down, the more deaths from COVID-19 occur.  Policymakers have had multiple scenarios to consider, including allowing normal activity to resume and focusing efforts on protecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly in long term care facilities, who make up about 80% of all COVID deaths.

The materials released today also suggest that instead of contemplating a course correction, the Walz administration is doubling down.  They are putting together a new model based on their original assumption of a high number of deaths and working backward to justify their conclusion and the basis of all of their damaging policies. That’s not scientific. It’s a logical fallacy called circular reasoning.”
