Dear Neighbors,
On Monday, Minnesota Management and Budget released the February budget forecast, showing a projected $9.25 billion surplus — up from the $7.75 billion surplus in the December forecast.
$9.25 billion is the largest budget surplus in Minnesota history and reinforces what we have known for months—Minnesotans are overtaxed.
While so many continue to struggle with inflation, rising energy prices, and more, it is unacceptable that state government is sitting on more than $9 billion in budget surplus. I will continue fighting for significant, permanent, and structural tax relief for every man, woman, and child in our state.
This surplus also means that we should immediately refill the state’s unemployment insurance (UI) fund to prevent a significant tax increase from hitting Minnesota businesses. A bill repaying the fund needs to be on the governor’s desk by March 14th, so there is no time to spare.
Public Safety
To stem the growing tide of crime, House Republicans unveiled a package of proposals this week aimed at making Minnesota a safer and more secure place.
Our proposal focuses on three key areas; crime prevention and accountability for criminals; police recruitment and retention and holding the criminal justice system accountable.
Key components of the package include stronger sentences for repeat offenders, requiring prosecutors to file charges for felonies when probable cause is present, electronic home monitoring when no bail is set for defendants accused of violent crimes, and establishing carjacking as a criminal offense.
I look forward to working with legislators to advance this package in hopes of providing the safety and security that Minnesotans expect and deserve.
