Things were much quieter around the House this week as the majority of work has shifted from long debates on the House floor to conference committee work. With Senate and House conferees negotiating final agreement on supplemental omnibus budget deals, the House has spent time passing a slew of stand-alone bills.
I was grateful to be chief-author of two bills that were approved by the House this week.
House File 3199 clarifies the intent of the Minnesota military code to make sure it conforms to changes made in the federal code. This is an initiative from the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs as they align with the federal manual for courts martial. It was unanimously approved 120-0.
I was also proud to author Senate File 1703 which designates July 16 as Atomic Veterans Day in honor of veterans who were exposed to radiation as a result of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as those that may have been exposed to radiation due to their close proximity to other weapons tests or those serving on nuclear powered submarines. Like HF 3199, this bill was also unanimously approved on a vote of 122-0.
We received federal assurance this week that traditional Minnesota driver's licenses will be sufficient to board domestic flights until at least October 1, 2020. This is great news as Real ID licenses are set to be available this October. Thankfully, no Minnesotan will have to worry whether or not they can board a plane with their normal driver’s license.
Finally, this week the House hosted representatives from TeenPact Leadership Schools. TeenPact gives students ages 8-19 a hands on learning experience at the State Capitol focused on state government and leadership training. TeenPact is currently in 42 other states and in March 2019 they will open this opportunity for students in Minnesota. For more information: www.teenpact.com
That’s all for this week’s update. I will have more information for you next week as we move into the final week of this year’s legislative session.
