Rep. Olson: the Capitol to the Community – 11.19.2020

Thursday, November 19, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Our state is at a critical juncture in our fight against COVID-19. Last night, Governor Walz announced a set of new public health guidelines aimed at preventing the virus from spreading across the state of Minnesota.

What’s changing?

Starting Friday at 11:59 p.m., bars and restaurants will only be open through take-out options, gyms and entertainment venues will close, and we’ll be putting a pause on youth sports. Other businesses such as retail establishments won’t experience any changes, and schools will continue to operate on the Safe Learning Plan which shifts between in-person, distance, and hybrid learning depending on the local conditions of the virus.

Pausing for COVID

Why is this necessary?

As COVID-19 spreads uncontrolled throughout our communities, the number of positive cases continue to surge, and along with that, the number of people hospitalized. Yesterday, tragically, Minnesota surpassed 3,000 deaths as a result of COVID-19. Our health care workers are overworked as they are caring for Minnesotans around the clock. Perhaps the most immediate concern is our critical care bed capacity, which in many areas is at or approaching the limit.

What can be done to help?

While these are the right moves by the Governor, I recognize the challenges and anxiety they are presenting to our small businesses, and they need assistance to keep their lights on. Simply put, at this time the state doesn’t have all the financial resources necessary to deliver the help businesses, families, and communities are counting on. A robust federal relief package is needed immediately, and earlier this week I signed on to this letter urging our leaders in Washington to work together to get this done.

This is an extremely difficult time for all of us, but I know how deeply we care for our families, our neighbors, and our communities. Continue to wash your hands frequently, practice social distancing, avoid social gatherings, wear a mask around others, and get tested if you have symptoms or have been around someone with COVID-19. As we move forward with optimism for a vaccine, let’s all do our part to protect one another and keep everyone safe and healthy.

It’s an honor to represent you.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson
