Rep. Olson: the Capitol to the Community - 3.22.2019

Friday, March 22, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

We’re about halfway through the 2019 legislative session and we’re taking bold action to improve the lives of Minnesotans.

PRIDE

This week, the House passed HF 400, my bill to comprehensively address our opioid crisis with prevention, treatment, and recovery strategies. This bill also put Big Pharma on notice that it’s time for them to be part of the solution, and our efforts will be funded by fees drug manufacturers and distributors will pay into a fund. I’m incredibly proud of the Minnesotans who have shared stories with policymakers how this crisis has impacted them. Input from law enforcement, our Native communities, and loved ones who have experienced harm, including addition and overdoses, was critical toward getting this bill approved in a strong, bipartisan way. I’m hopeful the Senate can move ahead soon and we can get a bill to the Governor’s desk which will save lives.

All Minnesotans deserve access to affordable, quality health care. For nearly 30 years, we’ve had a Health Care Access Fund which helps ensure Minnesotans, no matter their income, have a means to get the care they need. Unfortunately, if the Legislature doesn’t act, the funding stream for this is set to go away. Minnesotans who share this value are making their voices heard making clear that we need reliable funding for this essential care. Yesterday, folks gathered at the Capitol for a “Don’t Let the Sun Set” rally to continue these critical investments.

EXCITEMENT

I continue to be excited by bold youth leading the way in this state. Of all the high schools which came to the Capitol to advocate for a ban on so-called “conversion therapy” (a discredited practice which harms LGBTQ youth), the largest was from Duluth. They told powerful stories.

I also had the opportunity to join young people in Duluth pushing for action to address the impact of climate change. This level of enthusiasm and engagement is deeply inspiring.
