Rep. Olson: the Capitol to the Community - 2.21.2019

Thursday, February 21, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

Much of the work we’re able to accomplish at the State Capitol is only possible through Minnesotans telling their own stories. Bills are more than just words on a page and budgets are more than just numbers on a spreadsheet. We know that it’s through the voices of Minnesotans where together, we can make a real impact.

PRIDE

This week, Rep. Jen Schultz and I presented a bill to address some significant concerns regarding elder abuse in our state. Seniors and vulnerable adults deserve to live with dignity and receive the care they need. It was important for committee members to hear directly from family members of Minnesotans who have experienced maltreatment, neglect, abuse, and assault. I was moved by the testimony of a woman my age with a small child who was providing care for her mother with dementia. She helped her mother transition to an assisted living facility expecting her care needs to be met. Instead her mother was often found lost and wandering, or alone without the supports she was promised. It is because of stories like this that we need strong legislation to protect Minnesota's families. And I am proud to work with family advocates to move this important legislation forward.

EXCITEMENT

Yesterday and today were the annual Duluth and St. Louis County Days at the Capitol. This is such an important tradition which allows elected officials, civic leaders, members of the business community, educators and others to build meaningful bridges in Saint Paul. Despite some challenging weather, I was excited to see such a strong contingent from our region make the trip to share their priorities for this session.

The DNT had an excellent editorial here highlighting how the relationships built during these events helps legislators deliver stronger results for our community.

ACCESS

It’s critical that our state government operate in an accessible, accountable manner that values a variety of viewpoints and ideas. As the session progresses, I sincerely hope you will keep sharing your input with me. If you have a personal story you’d like to share, or if I can ever be of assistance, I especially encourage you to reach out. It’s an honor to be your voice in Saint Paul.

Sincerely,

Liz Olson

State Representative
