RELEASE: Rep. Lee applauds introduction of PROMISE Act for destroyed, damaged businesses

Monday, June 15, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS — Today, House DFL legislators who represent the most impacted areas from the recent civil unrest announced the PROMISE Act -- a comprehensive plan to help businesses rebuild and recover, many of which are Black, immigrant, and communities of color-owned. PROMISE stands for Providing Resources, Opportunity and Maximizing Investments in Striving Entrepreneurs.

Representative Fue Lee (DFL – Minneapolis) issued the following statement:

“The trauma of George Floyd’s horrific killing remains deeply felt within our community, and lawmakers are working to address the structural racism that made this tragedy possible in the first place. We also must step-up and help ensure our badly damaged and destroyed small businesses have the opportunity to rebuild. The PROMISE Act will give our community the resources and tools to do so.

“Recent property destruction impacted businesses owned by people of color and immigrants the hardest, and these establishments are a significant part of our community’s fabric. The Metropolitan Area Redevelopment Corporation – established under this plan – will ensure that this work is done with a focus on equity and to ensure assistance will be delivered to the businesses that need it most. Many legislators have seen the heartbreaking damage firsthand, and I’m hopeful they will join me in supporting this urgent relief.”
