Legislative Update: Paid Family Leave

THIS WEEK AT THE LEGISLATURE

This week I participated in a press conference to announce our efforts to combat hate crimes in Minnesota. Crimes driven by bias and hate are far too common in Minnesota and across the country. All Minnesotans should feel safe and free from discrimination based on their race, religion, gender, or beliefs. The legislation requires updated training for peace officers on crimes motivated by bias, and directs the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to consult with the Board of Peace Officer Standards on proposed improvements.

I also met with a constituent during Golf Course Superintendents Day on the Hill. 

Paid Family Leave

All Minnesotans should have time to care for themselves or loved ones. Right now, far too many Minnesotans have to choose between work and taking care of a new baby, a loved one, or themselves while finding it harder and harder to get ahead. I'm committed to providing greater economic security for Minnesotans who need to take time from work, and can’t go without a paycheck. While people at the top continue to do well, Minnesota’s working families continue to feel squeezed and forced to make impossible decisions - that's why I was proud to vote in favor of Paid Family Leave for All Minnesotans last night. 

COVID-19 

Amid all the legislative activity of the session is the underlying concern of if, when and how the COVID-19 virus will affect Minnesota. The virus, which is disrupting commerce and daily life around the world, seems to be a concern for everyone. So far, there are no confirmed cases reported in Minnesota. You can read the latest information here from the Minnesota Department of Health.

REAL ID

Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, Minnesotans won’t be able to use their standard driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. Minnesotans will need a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID card, passport or passport card or another acceptable form of identification for federal purposes.

The Department of Public Safety is urging Minnesotans to submit applications no later than June 15, 2020 if you want to receive a REAL ID prior to Oct.1. You can save time by making sure you have everything needed before you visit a driver’s license office.
