WELCOME TO THE 2019 LEGISLATIVE SESSION!
Tuesday, January 8 saw the Minnesota House of Representatives convene our 2019 legislative session. Some highlights of the day included my colleagues and I taking our official oath of office, as well as the election of Rep. Melissa Hortman as Speaker of the House.
This session I am honored to have been elected Assistant Majority Leader by my DFL colleagues. I’m also pleased to have been appointed to the following committees for the 2019-2020 biennium:
* Vice Chair of the Capital Investment Division (Bonding)
* The Environment & Natural Resources Finance Division
* The Government Operations Committee
THIS WEEK IN THE LEGISLATURE
Yesterday we wrapped up our first week of committee hearings. Most of the hearings were overviews of the committees and their responsibilities.
CAPITAL INVESTMENT DIVISION
We discussed the state’s investment in infrastructure this century and capital investments that have significantly impacted Minnesotans. I spoke about the state’s 1998 investment in the Humboldt Greenway Project and how it has led to the development of the Shingle Creek and Lind-Bohanon neighborhoods with additions such as Kingsley Common and several single-family and town homes.
ENVIRONMENT & NATURAL RESOURCES FINANCE DIVISION
We started the Environment Finance committee this year with a hearing on the Department of Natural Resources’ response to the chronic wasting disease outbreak. I wanted to ensure that the DNR is reaching out to the hunters outside of the outbreak areas in southeastern Minnesota because most of the big game hunters in the state are from Hennepin County.

GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEE
In March 2018, the federal government appropriated $380 million for grants under the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) to support state efforts to secure elections infrastructure against cyber threats. Each state was allocated a share of the grant money and Minnesota was designated a total of $6,815,391.
Yesterday we met to advance two elections bills with bipartisan support to appropriate this funding to the Secretary of State to use for modernizing the statewide voter registration system; improving accessibility; training local election officials; and implementing security improvements for election systems.
Please join me on January 31st from 5:30 - 8:00pm at the Urban Research and Outreach Engagement Center for a town hall with Senator Bobby Joe Champion and Representative Ray Dehn.
I encourage you to contact me with any questions, comments, concerns, or ideas on any legislative topic. Also, I am available during select hours on Monday and Friday mornings most weeks for in-district meetings, if Northside residents aren’t able to make it to the Capitol. If you would like to send me a message or set up an in-district meeting, you can reach me by phone at 651-296-4262 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to hearing from you!
