Minnesota House expected to pass E-12 Budget

St. Paul, MN This evening, the Minnesota House of Representatives is expected to approve an E-12 education budget that makes investments to ensure school districts have the resources they need to be successful. The budget is inspired by parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators who have told legislators how budget cuts and growing class sizes have impacted the quality of instruction, support, and education provided in schools.

“Our students and teachers are one of Minnesota’s greatest strengths. We owe it to them to make these investments and ensure that every child in Minnesota, no matter where they live or the color of their skin, can get off to a great start,” said Rep. Kunesh-Podein, vice chair of the Education Policy Committee. “This is the first step toward building a Minnesota that works better for everyone.”

Rep. Kunesh-Podein is the chief author of a provision in the omnibus bill that would strengthen teacher licensure requirements, ensuring high standards for Minnesota's education professionals who teach and mentor students almost every day. She is also the chief author of a bill to close persistent graduation and opportunity gaps by recruiting and retaining more teachers of color and indigenous teachers.

After the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate approves their E-12 education budget, lawmakers from each chamber will form a conference committee to reach agreement on a final budget.
