Legislative Update - November 13, 2018

Tuesday, November 13, 2018

It's good to back in communication with our communities once again!

The 2018 election season concluded last week, and I’d like to thank you for selecting me to represent District 41B for the next two years. I look forward to continuing to hone my skills as an effective legislator over my next term as your state representative. I can assure you that I will continue to listen to you, my constituents, translating your concerns into workable proposals and building consensus in order to implement them.

Over the past two years, many have taken the time to share their ideas with me, their concerns, and aspirations; I sincerely appreciate the willingness to discuss what really matters. You have entrusted me with the responsibility of speaking on your behalf as your representative, and I ask that you continue to provide me with the ideas and feedback I will need to do what’s best for our communities.

Minnesota has a new DFL majority in the House (32 new DFL freshman!) and I look forward with great anticipation to working with our new and seasoned representatives moving Minnesota in the right direction. I will continue to work for you as your State Representative, building toward a strong economy, a good living wage with a well-educated workforce, building toward prosperity in our communities and throughout Minnesota. Let’s continue to work together to make a One Minnesota where people, no matter where they live, can count on a bright future.

VETERANS DAY

In honor of Veteran's Day, I’d like to remember and thank all the women and men who have served our country. The contributions by past and present veterans hold a special place in our hearts and we are truly indebted for their - and their families’ - sacrifice and service.

HEATING ASSISTANCE

If you or someone you know needs help paying heating bills this winter, the Minnesota Dept. of Commerce is has $116 million in federal funds available for low-income heating assistance.

Check https://mn.gov/puc/consumers/help/shut-off-protection/ to see how you can apply.

MEDICARE SCAMS

The 2019 Medicare Open Enrollment period continues through December 7.

Many Minnesota seniors are now shopping for new 2019 Medicare plans and the Minnesota Commerce Department is urging seniors to be alert for confusing or deceptive advertising and sales offers. Make sure any information is from Medicare or a legitimate agent, and not a scam artist. On the internet, go to the official website at https://www.medicare.gov/ or visit the: MN Commerce Dept. for tips on how to protect yourself or a loved one: https://mn.gov/commerce/media/news/?id=357233

Calling all HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS!

There’s still time to get your application in to be a Page during the 2019 Legislative Session. Applications with essays must be submitted or emailed before November 28, 2018.

Here’s a bit about the program:

Throughout the course of their week in Saint Paul, High School Page Program participants are exposed to a wide variety of experiences, designed to provide them with a deep understanding of our state government. And receive a stipend!

Among the many highlights included in each student's week at the Capitol are:

  • Individual meetings with legislators designed to allow students to discuss the issues that matter most to them.
  • Experiencing the legislative process firsthand by assisting members during the legislative session.
  • Participating in a mock committee session designed to develop students' leadership skills and to inspire them to think critically about the issues confronting our state.
  • Providing students with the opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists, and members of the media.

For more information and the application, go to the link below. I hope to see some of our students from Columbia Heights, Hilltop, New Brighton & St. Anthony at the Capitol! https://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/edprog/over2p.htm

I closing, I thank you once again. I could not do this job without the involvement and openness of the people I represent. As in the past two years, do not hesitate to contact me as needed.

Best,

Mary KP
