Kunesh-Podein Statement on Repealing Sunday Liquor Sale Prohibition

Monday, February 20, 2017

ST. PAUL—The Minnesota House of Representatives voted to repeal Minnesota’s prohibition on Sunday liquor sales by a vote of 85-45. Representative Mary Kunesh-Podein (DFL-New Brighton) released the following statement:

“Repealing the prohibition on Sunday liquor sales has had increasing support over recent years and I certainly understand people who want to be able to purchase liquor on Sunday. However, I am concerned that changing the current laws will increase overhead costs for locally-owned liquor stores and municipal liquor stores.

“St. Anthony and Columbia Heights use the profits from their municipal liquor stores to support city operations like police and fire departments, as well as local parks. Any loss in revenue will likely require a property tax increase, which is why I oppose repealing Minnesota’s prohibition on Sunday liquor sales.”
