Rep. Jurgens Legislative Update

Friday, March 25, 2022

Hello from St. Paul,

We are nearing the end of a very busy week at the State Capitol. All House committees were in full swing, attempting to hear as many possible bills before the first legislative deadline. This means in order for any bill to move forward during the rest of session, it had to have been heard in a legislative committee by Friday.

SOCIAL SECURITY TAX RELIEF BILL HEARD IN HOUSE TAXES COMMITTEE

Some good news and some bad news to report on my legislation that would eliminate the state income tax from senior citizens’ Social Security benefits. The good news it was heard by the Minnesota House Taxes Committee this week, which means it is eligible to be acted upon by the full House later this year. The committee decided it would be held over for possible inclusion in a more comprehensive taxes proposal that will be unveiled later this year.

The bad news is the committee chairman said Social Security tax relief will not move forward as a stand-alone bill. This is disappointing as I think – as a stand-alone measure - there would be overwhelming support for this plan.

We will see what happens with my Social Security tax relief bill in the coming weeks. My thanks to Cottage Grove resident John Kingsbury, who testified in favor of my bill before the Taxes committee and did a great job explaining how eliminating the tax on Social Security would benefit Minnesota’s senior citizens.
