Rep. Haley Legislative Update

Friday, January 31, 2020

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

It’s been a busy week for me meeting with groups and residents throughout the district and traveling to St. Paul to prepare for session.   On Tuesday, I met with the Red Wing High School principal and teachers to hear their thoughts and concerns regarding K-12 Education, and on Wednesday Senator Goggin and I held a pair of “constituent coffees” in Lake City and Red Wing to learn about legislative topics that are important to local residents.

I’m very appreciative of the teachers for taking time to have me observe their classrooms, talk with students, and listen to the successes and challenges that they face.

They do yeoman’s work day in and day out to not only educate our kids, but also to support young people in all aspects of their lives and encourage them on their road to becoming stable, successful adults.  Many times it’s “the systems” that get in the way of our progress in education and our shared goals of meeting all kids needs -wherever they are at.  I will continue to make education a priority in my work at the Capitol.

My thanks to those who took time this week to meet with me and make their voices heard.

APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR AUTOMATION TRAINING INCENTIVE PILOT PROGRAM

Attention business owners: I wanted to let you know about a pilot program being offered by the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership to assist small businesses (100 or fewer employees) that are investing in new automation technology.

The program provides grants of up to $25,000 to train existing workers on new automation technology. Grants are available to Minnesota businesses in the manufacturing or skilled assembly production industry, and that have recently invested in new automation technology or plan to invest in new automation technology within the project timeframe.

Grants are approved by the Commissioner of DEED on a first-come, first-served basis and applications are being accepted through June 30, 2020. To learn more, click here.

LEARN AND EARN PROGRAM MAKING A DIFFERENCE

This week I received an update on the Learn and Earn Program, which is a state grant (from the Youth Skills Training bill that I championed) being managed by Red Wing Ignite to provide skills training to local students. More than 20 students are taking advantage of the program this semester!

My thanks to these area companies who are participating in Learn and Earn and offering high school students the chance for internships.  Acrotech Inc; Central Research Laboratories; Custom Iron; Gemini Inc; Hearth and Home; Knobelsdorff Enterprises; 3M Fall Protection; Neufeldt Industrial Services; Red Wing Shoe Company; Riedell Skates; SCS Elevator; Sturdiwheat; and Valleycraft.
