Rep. Haley Legislative Update (1-25)

Friday, January 25, 2019

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you’ve all had a great week, are staying warm, and are ready for the even colder temperatures we will be seeing next week. With subzero high temperatures and overnight lows as cold as 25 below, please be safe and take precautions if you are traveling.

The week started off with Reverend Martin Luther King Jr Day, as we honored his life and legacy. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King is from a prayer he wrote: “O God…help us to walk together, pray together, sing together, and live together until that day when all of God’s children…will rejoice in one common band of humanity in the kingdom of our Lord. Amen.”

In this week’s update, I’ll highlight the March for Life at the Capitol and give you a preview of some bills I am authoring.

March for Life

On Tuesday, I joined a group from Goodhue and thousands of pro-life Minnesotans at the annual March for Life at the Capitol.  I am inspired by the great number of supporters who took time out of their day and braved the cold weather to make their voices heard on this very important issue. The energy of the March for Life reminds us that every human life has value and deserves to be protected. As your state representative, please know I will always fight to protect life and advocate for the rights of the unborn.

My Bills

There are a number of bills that I am in the process of drafting and introducing this year. Among others, I will be authoring legislation to provide funding for local port upgrades to improve local waterway transportation and benefit our local economy; provide funding to ensure access to workforce and affordable housing in our area; and to provide tax relief to folks who are paying extraordinarily high insurance rates.

In addition to bills I am chief authoring, I am also co-authoring important bills this year, such as legislation to ensure small schools receive equitable education funding; a bill to ensure those who care for disabled individuals are paid competitive wages; and legislation to address the issues surrounding the alleged fraud (upwards of $100 million) of state childcare assistance funds.

The above is not an all-inclusive list for the session, just some of the issues I worked on this week. My colleagues and I continue to highlight and work on other significant issues like the opioid crisis, the need for mental health funding, safe driving legislation, the high cost of healthcare, and the need for tax reform. I will keep you informed as potential solutions are vetted and bills come forward for consideration.

Community Events

The Lake City Chamber of Commerce held its annual dinner and meeting on Thursday evening at the Lake City Sportsmen’s Club. The room was packed and I made it in time to listen to Executive Director, Michelle Larson, speak about the past year’s accomplishments and plans for 2019.

Personal Note

Thank you to everyone who expressed their condolences about my father’s death. I appreciate your care and concern and was very touched by the many emails, texts, and cards I received. He was an extraordinary man who will be greatly missed by us all.
