Rep. Haley Legislative Update (5/31)

Thursday, May 31, 2018

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Congratulations to the seniors from Cannon Falls, Red Wing, Lake City, and Goodhue who will be graduating this weekend!  This is an important milestone in the lives of these young people, and I wish them nothing but the best as they take on life’s next challenges.

In legislative news, I am pleased to announce that yesterday morning Governor Dayton signed into law the bonding bill that was passed by the legislature at the end of session.  This geographically balanced package features $825 million in general obligation bonds to be used to fund construction projects statewide, such as roads and bridges and water infrastructure.

Included in the bill is $25 million for critical school safety building upgrades – a top priority of mine and House Republicans during the 2018 legislative session.  In the wake of the governor’s veto of school safety funding last week, these dollars are especially important in bolstering our schools’ efforts to improve student safety.

The bonding bill’s enactment is great news for our communities as well.  I authored measures in the bill to provide funding for Wabasha’s National Eagle Center, the Goodhue County Historical Society, the Mississippi Blufflands Trail, and the Port Development Assistance Fund (which Red Wing and Wabasha can apply for).  I worked hard to help get these project across the finish line this year, and I am proud to have played a role in securing this needed funding to benefit our area.

An additional highlight of the package is the $32 million for the construction of three new veterans homes and renovation of existing homes around the state.  It also includes more than $415 million in trunk highway bonds for key improvements to highways 14, 23, and 252.

While I remain frustrated by the governor’s vetoes of two very good bills last week, yesterday’s approval of the bonding bill is a win for Minnesota.  The bill is consistent with Minnesotans’ priorities, as it respects taxpayers, will help boost job creation, and focuses on local infrastructure needs.  I am eager to see the positive impact it will have on our community and others around the state in the years to come.
