Legislative Update from Representative Matt Grossell

Friday, March 4, 2022

It's been another busy week serving you in the State House. My Republican colleagues and I strive to do meaningful work for you. This week we received the most recent budget forecast. Minnesota has a projected $9.25 billion dollar budget surplus. We need to use these funds to end the social security tax, refill our unemployment insurance fund and the rest needs to go back to you— the taxpayer! If we have billions of dollars in a surplus it can only mean one thing, you are clearly being overtaxed!

I am also really proud of the work myself and fellow House Republicans did on a Public Safety Proposal. It is no secret that under Gov. Walz, Minnesotans are not safer. We have record-setting increases in violent crime rates across the board; our law enforcement is demonized, disrespected and criminals get a free pass. I am part of the team introducing legislation that would prevent crime, increase police retention and recruitment and hold our criminal justice system accountable for the soft approach on sentencing criminals.

I have submitted a bill that would require the Sentencing Guidelines Commission to report whenever mandatory minimum sentences were not imposed. This is information the public has a right to know! I am cosponsoring other pieces of legislation as part of this proposal as well.

As always, I am a phone call or email away. Do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you and God Bless!
