RELEASE: Rep. Keith Franke Statement on Local School Safety Grants

Wednesday, October 3, 2018

ST. PAUL – Rep. Keith Franke, R-St. Paul Park, issued the following statement regarding recent news that South St. Paul Secondary of the South St. Paul School District and Red Rock Elementary of the South Washington County School District are receiving school safety grant funding totaling $636,000 combined. Last session, the legislature approved and Governor Dayton signed into law $25 million in capital investment funds that schools could apply for to make physical safety improvements.

“One of our goals this session was to provide schools with funding to improve security,” said Franke. “It’s encouraging to see our local schools take advantage of these state grants to help keep our students safer when they go to school each day. This is still such an important issue, and one we’ll look to address again in the coming session.”

The legislature approved an additional $25 million in school safety grants as part of the supplemental budget bill, but those funds were vetoed by Governor Dayton.
