News from Rep. Keith Franke 3-23-2018

Friday, March 23, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

Our week leading up to the first committee deadline was certainly eventful. The 3M water testing bill, legislation for the Seidl's Lake project, and other important proposals were heard in committee over the last few days.

3M Water Testing

I’m co-authoring legislation with Rep. Tony Jurgens to allow for testing of private wells for PFC contamination in the eastern metro. The bill gives more power back to residents so they can decide if they want their wells tested for PFCs. If these tests come back with a PFC contamination at or above 50% of the health risk limit or health-based advisory value, the Pollution Control Agency must do further testing.

This is an important measure in protecting our area, and I was happy to see support for this bill.

Seidl's Lake Bill

Earlier this week, I presented my bill to use bonding dollars for the Seidl's Lake stormwater lift station. I was thankful to have South St. Paul mayor James Francis come to the hearing on the legislation. I sponsored a bill on this last session, and am hopeful that this important water project will be considered if and when the various bonding proposals are announced later in session.

GI Bill

Last year, I authored a provision that became law to expand the GI Bill benefits in our state. In addition to postsecondary education assistance, my legislation also provided for apprenticeships and on-the-job training benefits. This week, I presented language to clarify state statute to make this easier to use for veterans.

Local Event

Tomorrow, I’m honored to attend the swearing-in ceremony for new firefighters in St. Paul Park. We can’t thank these heroes enough for signing up to put their life on the line to keep our residents safe. I’m looking forward to the ceremony and meeting some of our new firefighters.
