Legislative Update - April 5, 2018

Thursday, April 5, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

While the calendar indicates it’s spring, snow is persistently sticking around. Although our family loves spending time in the snow, we are ready for warmer temperatures and garden planting. If you celebrate, I hope you had a good Easter with your family, and likewise if you celebrate Passover.

I want to thank everyone who joined me for coffee at Caribou last Saturday. We discussed a lot of important issues and it was very helpful to hear directly from constituents.

Town Hall Meeting

You’re invited to join me for a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, April 28. We’ll meet at Little Canada City Hall (515 Little Canada Rd E) from 9:30-11:00 a.m. It will be a good opportunity to share your priorities and get an update on the major issues left to address this legislative session.

All constituents are welcome, and I hope to see you there!

Constituent Survey

Here’s another reminder to take my 2018 Legislative Survey. Gathering input like this helps me more effectively advocate for our community at the Minnesota House. It takes just a few minutes and you can complete the survey online here.

Conservation MN Meet and Greet

Next Tuesday, April 10, I’ll be joining Rep. Peter Fischer of Maplewood for a Meet and Greet hosted by Conservation Minnesota. Protecting our lakes, rivers and other natural resources is incredibly important to me and I’m looking forward to focusing on environmental issues at this event.  The event is from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ramsey County Library in Maplewood (3025 Southlawn Dr), in the Community Programs Room.

Tour of Pipefitters Training Center

I recently had the opportunity to tour the Minneapolis Pipefitters’ training center in Minneapolis with Sen. Isaacson. This is an impressive facility with many training modules and a great deal of equipment. We’re proud to have this in our region and appreciate the knowledge and skills they pass on, getting students into apprenticeships, and from there into quality careers.

Sexual Harassment Working Group

Last week, there was an attempt to move forward an initiative to create an independent task force to address sexual harassment at the State Capitol. Unfortunately, this move was defeated. Remarkably, no official action has been taken on this issue since high-profile incidents were brought to light in November.

Because of the inaction by current leadership, yesterday I announced my plans to convene a working group to come up with solutions to this issue. Everyone who visits or works at the Capitol should be able to do so in a safe environment, and it’s time to move forward with meaningful steps ensuring this can be the case.

Neighborhood Cleanup Days

Now that it’s spring, it’s a good time to clean up around the house and garage and get rid of stuff you no longer want or need. Our area communities are holding events where you can dispose of or recycle items that trash haulers won’t easily take. Mark your calendars!
