SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Today, U.S. Steel announced plans to upgrade its iron ore capabilities in Minnesota with a $150 million investment toward a system dedicated to producing Direct Reduced (DR)-grade pellets. The plant will be located at either its Keetac or Minntac facility on the Iron Range.
Rep. Rob Ecklund (DFL – International Falls) issued the following statement:
“I’m glad to hear U.S. Steel will have a new DR pellet plant here in northeastern Minnesota. This move will help protect jobs on the Iron Range while strengthening the future of iron ore production in the region. DR pellets are a major part of the future of iron ore production, and it’s good to see U.S. Steel pick the Iron Range to expand their development of this new technology. Steel made in the U.S.A. is vital toward our nation’s infrastructure and national security. Steel made from iron ore produced in Minnesota is even better.”
