RELEASE: Northland lawmakers excited by newest permit approval for PolyMet

Friday, March 22, 2019

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced approval of PolyMet’s permit for the company’s NorthMet project near Hoyt Lakes. The Corps evaluated construction-related wetland impacts, and their approval authorizes the discharge of dredged and fill material. PolyMet now holds all necessary permits to construct and operate the copper-nickel-precious metals mine and processing plant.

Members of the Iron Range Delegation in the Minnesota House, Rep. Rob Ecklund (DFL – International Falls), Rep. Julie Sandstede (DFL – Hibbing) and Rep. Dave Lislegard (DFL – Aurora), jointly issued the following statement:

“The approval of this permit is exciting news today for the people of the Iron Range. This been a long time coming to get to this step, and all along the way, those involved have been extremely diligent in ensuring this project will meet or exceed all environmental standards. The process has been followed, and with this approval, the process can be proven. The metals to be mined at this site are those that Minnesotans rely on every single day, and we look forward to them being produced right here in northern Minnesota.

“With our rich mining heritage of the past and present, we’re thrilled to see these opportunities on the horizon so we can continue to have a strong way of life well into the future. Business, labor, and communities have all worked hard to make this happen and we can’t wait to see work get started.”
