Friday, February 22, 2019

EVELETH, Minn. – Today, state Rep. Rob Ecklund (DFL – International Falls) was elected Chair of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) at the panel’s first meeting of the year. Rep. Ecklund is excited for the work ahead creating partnerships to grow and enhance the economy of northeastern Minnesota.

“There’s enormous potential for us to do positive things for our region, and I’m thankful for my fellow members of the Range delegation entrusting me with this position,” Rep. Ecklund said. “This is a unique agency serving a region which we know has some unique challenges. I’m optimistic that by working together, we can create opportunities to grow and attract jobs, and ensure the Iron Range can be strong and prosperous well into the future.”

The board serves in an advisory capacity providing oversight for the Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation. It consists of the state senators and representatives elected from districts in which one-third or more of the residents reside within the IRRRB service area. The Senate appoints one additional member as well.

The agency provides vital funding, including low or no interest loans and grants for businesses relocating or expanding in the region. Additionally, a variety of grants are available to local units of government, education institutions, and nonprofits that promote workforce development and sustainable communities.
