RELEASE: Ecklund statement on the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court Ruling

Thursday, June 28, 2018

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Wednesday, the US Supreme Court announced their 5-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME, ruling that public sector unions cannot charge fair share fees to workers who choose not to join the union but still benefit from collective bargaining agreements.

Rep. Rob Ecklund (DFL - International Falls) released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s ruling is deeply troubling on a number of fronts, and will serve to embolden Republican attacks on the ability of Minnesotans to collectively bargain. The ruling will also further alter the landscape in our country where the rich and corporate special interests grab more and more control while working families continue to struggle.

“But this ruling does nothing to change my solidarity with our state’s union members who teach our kids, keep our prisons secure, deliver health care to vulnerable people, and so many others making our state great each and every day. I continue to stand with my brothers and sisters in labor to fight for safe working conditions, fair pay, and policies which strengthen the opportunity for all Minnesota families to prosper.”
