Legislative Update - March 1st, 2017

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

Hello Northlanders,

This has been a very busy week at the Capitol. I am glad I was visited by so many of my labor brothers and sisters. I was able to meet with some 49ers, IBEW members, and saw plenty of friends from LIUNA.

During a labor rally at the Capitol, I spoke about protecting our right to organize and how important it is telling our story to decision makers. I also talked about the need to create jobs by passing a robust bonding bill and a comprehensive transportation plan that will put thousands of people to work here in Minnesota.

It was great to see so many labor friends and allies, but it comes during a troubling week. On Thursday we are debating and voting on legislation that stops local communities from setting pro-worker policies such as sick leave, family leave, or a higher minimum wage. 150,000 workers in Minnesota risk losing sick time benefits if this legislation becomes law.

Anti-worker legislation like this is popping up all across the United States. It’s not difficult to understand that rolling back earned sick time is wrong. Every community is different. Local governments should be able to set standards that work for their residents and that meet their needs.

I was also pleased to meet with Sara Carman from Cook County during the University of Minnesota-Morris Day at the Capitol. The future is in good hands with people like Sara.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to represent you in St. Paul.

Sincerely,

Rob Ecklund
State Representative
