Legislative Update - January 19th, 2017

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Hello Northlanders!

The weather is warming up in St. Paul. I have to say it is pretty odd going outside without a jacket in January when it is 40 degrees.

Premium Relief Debate
Tonight we are debating a proposal to provide premium for Minnesotans on the individual market who are facing large premium increases. The January 31st deadline for enrolling for 2017 health insurance is fast approaching and we need to make sure people know help is on the way. I am ready to pass immediate relief now and work to make health care more accessible and affordable this session as well.

Sunday Liquor Sales
For over 70 years lawmakers in Minnesota have debated whether to allow Sunday liquor sales. It appears we are closer than ever to changing the current law. I certainly understand many people’s desire to go to the liquor store on Sunday. However, I am very concerned about the many small town liquor stores in our area-who are against Sunday liquor sales. Those stores believe the additional cost of being open on Sunday be more than be more than the potential revenue which will hurt their business. We will see in the coming weeks what happens.

Buffer Rule Discussion
Today there was a long discussion in committee on Minnesota’s current legislative buffer law. It is clear the buffer laws are a work in progress, but the program can be fixed. I appreciated all those who came down to tell their story. Minnesota’s natural resources belong to everyone and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect them.

Please let me know if you have anything that I can help you with as your legislator!

Sincerely,
Rob Ecklund
State Representative
